 LYNDA OLSEN ADELSON

Painting – Collage – Mixed Media

Lynda and Michael Adelson have been leaders in the Cambria arts scene since 1981, when they opened Seekers Glass Gallery.

They sold Seekers and retired in 2005 and soon after Lynda began creating her art in a large, four-room studio (where Michael joined her a year later to do fine art photography).

Late in 2009 they converted an unused, adjacent studio room and created Gallerie Lulu.

Lynda’s creative space gives her perfect north light. To create her art Lynda uses a variety of materials, including acrylic mediums and paints, watercolor, pastels and handmade paper. Additionally, she uses fresh water pearls, antique buttons and beads, her own origami creations, magazine clippings and downloaded images and found objects for collage and her popular one-of-a kind greeting cards.

Much of Lynda’s art demonstrates the influence of different cultures gleaned during more than four decades of traveling. She has visited more than 100 countries and numerous cities in Asia; India; Africa; Egypt and the Middle East; Indochina; China; Mexico and Central America; Europe and the Mediterranean; Britain, Scotland and Ireland; Scandinavia; Russia and more.

Lynda earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree, with a double major in Journalism and Political Science, from California State University, Northridge. Fascinated by a yearlong course in Art History, she went to Europe for the first time in 1967. She visited dozens of major art museums during a three-month odyssey that included Paris, London, Rome, Venice, Florence, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and other cities with important art collections.

While still in college, she studied Photojournalism. This taught her the importance of composition, whether in a news photo or a painting. Michael had a longtime interest in photography, so they studied fine art photography at UCLA and built a darkroom in their home.

Since becoming an artist in 2005, Lynda’s artwork has won prizes and sold at numerous art shows.

Gallerie Lulu is located upstairs at 2450 Main Street, in Cambria’s historic East Village. The gallery features signed and framed originals: Michael’s travel and digitally enhanced photographs, Lynda’s paintings and mixed media artwork as well as Michael and Lynda’s collaborative artwork. Unframed photos and artwork, special orders and commissions are also available.

Gallerie Lulu is open most days from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We suggest calling first at 805-927-5800 to make sure we’re open or to make an appointment to see the gallery.

MICHAEL ADELSON

DIGITALLY ENHANCED

   PHOTOGRAPHY

Michael and Lynda Adelson have been leaders in the Cambria arts scene since 1981, when they opened Seekers Glass Gallery.

They sold Seekers in 2005. Not content to be “retired,” both Michael and Lynda began creating art in a large, four-room studio.

In 2010 they converted an unused, adjacent studio room and created Gallerie Lulu.

Michael digitally enhances all his photos, which are divided into several categories based on content. Since becoming an artist in 2005, Michael has won prizes and sold his artwork at numerous art shows.

Michael’s travel photos reveal the influence of more than five decades of world traveling. He has visited more than 100 countries and hundreds of cities, towns and villages in Asia; India; Africa; Egypt and the Middle East; Indochina; China; Mexico and Central America; Europe and the Mediterranean; Britain, Scotland and Ireland; Scandinavia; Russia and more.

Michael’s love of photography began at the unlikely age of nine! Without help, he built a complete darkroom in a spare bathroom at home, and developed prints from his brownie camera.

In the late 1970s their shared interest in photography prompted Michael and Lynda to study fine art photography at UCLA. They later built a darkroom in their home, where both developed prints taken with 35mm format cameras. This was long before the advent of the point and shoot digital cameras of today. It required knowledge of F-stops, aperture settings, film speed and other factors.

Michael become proficient in Photoshop during the years he took photos of glass art for Seekers, with glass being one of the most difficult materials to photograph. He continues to hone his Photoshop skills in order to create more complicated digitally enhanced photos. As a skilled colorist, Michael works with vibrant, saturated colors and hues not found in nature.
